Label TextThe era’s greatest female blues-rock vocalist, Joplin combined the African American music of the South she heard growing up in Port Arthur, Texas, with psychedelic acid-rock in San Francisco. A talented song-writer, arranger, painter, and dancer, she was also famous for her insatiable appetites. These contributed to the tragic end of her four-year career from a heroin overdose. Her performances at the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, and the Festival Express train tour were legendary. This image suggests their physical and emotional intensity.ProvenanceDavid DavisOn View
