Label TextIn 1965 Ray Manzarek, a classically trained pianist, teamed up with the poet Jim Morrison to write music. They enlisted jazz-oriented guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, to form the Doors. In an era of hallucinogenic drug experimentation the band took its name from Aldous Huxley’s book "The Doors of Perception." Morrison’s charisma, his interest in stagecraft—especially Julian Beck’s Living Theater—and his improvised verse onstage, made him a rock pioneer. The band’s meteoric career ended with his death in 1971, at age twenty-seven.
