DescriptionThe head consists of very simplified shapes. It features a long thrusting tip of quadrangular cross-section; a deeply concave axe-blade; and a slightly downturned rear fluke; the blade and fluke are both pierced in patterns that resemble trees, and the fluke has an upward curving projection on its upper side. The socket is square, the 2 lateral sides being integral with the head and extending into langets; the 2 front and rear sides of the socket are created by the upper end of the front and rear langets. A square iron collar secures the base of the socket.

Old staff of quadrangular cross-section with molded corners.
Label TextHalberds had been an important battlefield weapon in the late Middle Ages, but by the time this one was made they were increasingly serving as badges of rank. The axehead and beak on this one have become largely decorative, and only the thrusting tip remains functional.ProvenanceArchduke Eugen's Armory, Fortress Hohenwerfen, Salzburg, Austria
