DescriptionLong quadangular thrusting spike becoming hexagonal at its base. Compact crescentic axehead, pierced with sets of holes above & below & drawn into low cusps at these points. Both faces inlaided with brass dots forming Latin cross (these probably go right through the metal). Axehead opposed by triangular stepped flat fluke angled towards staff. Base of fluke pierced with 3 holes. Socket formed by 2 long langets. Separate set of langets attached to sides, & all 4 are secured at base of socket by square iron ring. Base of socket has possibly been hammered after assembly to tighten the fit. Modern wooden staff of square section, turned at corners.
ProvenancePurchased by Museum at Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc. (NYC) on November 25, 1953, sale no. 1473. Paid $35 for lot which included HAM#s 3041.1-3. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
