Label TextThis view exemplifies Goya’s masterful use of aquatint. The artist began the process by dusting powdered rosin onto a metal plate, which is then heated to melt the minute particles to its surface. When etching acid is applied, the rosin granules protect the tiny areas of metal beneath them, but the spaces between are bitten away. The plate is cleaned, then inked, and the pigment is captured in the eroded areas, printing this microscopic latticework. To the naked eye this fine pattern appears as tone. Goya produced veils of tone that suggest the illuminated sky and clouds over a modeled landscape.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
