Label TextHere Goya represents the historical transition of bull hunting to ritualized sport, indicated in part by the reference to an architectural enclosure. Many features of the print are historically inaccurate. One figure entices a bull to pass him by waving his shawl, a move called suerte de espaldas. This maneuver from behind is credited to the matador Pepe Hillo in 1793, nine centuries later. Goya burnished the plate creating a stark juxtaposition of light and dark to frame and unite the torero and bull.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
