Label TextThe earliest record of a public bullfight dates from 1090, part of the wedding celebrations of princess Urraca of Castille to Raymond of Burgundy. However, Goya perpetuated the legend that El Cid Campeador was the first Castilian to fight a bull on horseback in a public ring. The artist represented the legendary knight and general of the eleventh century with vaguely historical costume and caparison similar to that of his print of Charles V, who lived four hundred years later. To Goya’s audience historical accuracy made little difference to nationalist legend.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
