Label TextHere Goya represented the bullfighting style of recortes—or “trimming”—practiced in northern Spain. Unlike the ritualized toros corrida, in recortes amateurs perform acrobatic stunts around the bull without capes or mortal weapons. The recortadors evade the bull by their speed and agility, competing for points awarded by a jury. The bull remains alive, though occasionally injured, returning to its pen at the end of the performance. Modern sensibilities have sparked a resurgence of recortes, which now provides popular television entertainment in Spain.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
