Label TextThis print represents a famous feat at that took place at Zaragoza in 1764. Though Martincho was widely considered to be past his prime, he reclaimed champion stature with this courageous display. First he faced the bull using his hat instead of a cape. Then the matador appeared in a chair with his legs shackled. To survive the bull’s charge, Martincho had to meet its onslaught with his sword in the bull’s skull, placed in a precise spot to kill the beast instantaneously. To accentuate the bull’s powerful lunge Goya placed the background barrier at a diagonal.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
