DescriptionPlate 10 of the TauromaquiaLabel TextCharles V ruled as king of Spain in 1516-1556, but managed his vast Habsburg empire from Vienna. He asserted political power in robust and subtle ways. In 1527, to celebrate the birth of his son, the future Philip II, the emperor staged a bullfight. Goya depicted him as a knight in cuirass and leg armor. He slays a bull with the élan of a great picador. This symbolic display demonstrated that Charles was as Spanish as his subjects. Ironically, bullfights disgusted the future King Philip II, who persuaded Pope Pius V to ban bullfighting by papal decree.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
