Label TextGoya’s handwritten title for this print is “The Famous Mamón.” His chief literary source, the poet and historian Nicolás Fernández Moratín, described how “El Mamón” was best known for grabbing a bull by the tail and one horn, then twisting the animal into position so that he could jump on its back. In the published print, however, Goya identified the matador as the same man from the preceding print, Martincho. Goya may have wished to concentrate our attention on technique rather than on the torero’s personality for the sake of continuity.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UKOn View
