Label TextJuan Apiñari was the most famous bullfighter of a family from Calhorra in La Rioja that sent six men into the professional bullring over the course of twenty years. The recortador was short in stature but had lightning reflexes and normally unerring judgement, so fans called him “El Navarrito,” or “The Eye.” Outside the ring Apiñari was a braggart; like many modern superstar athletes he was infamous for his fights and licentious behavior. Later in his career he fled to the provincial town of Oran on the coast of Algeria, where he ended up in jail. There, Apiñari was killed in the bullring in about 1772.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UKOn View
