Label TextDrawing from literary tradition, Goya represents a lance as the original banderilla. These barbed sticks, decorated with colored paper frills, occupy the second of the three stages of a bullfight. After the picadors face the bull on horseback, two banderilleros each try to plant two lances in the bull’s shoulders while on foot. The light, sharp darts anger and invigorate the animal for the face to face confrontation with the matador. While some matadors place their own banderillas, most employ these specialized assistants.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
