Label TextSometimes when a bull remains unresponsive to the banderillas, a cry of “Fuego! Fuego!” rises up from the crowd. The banderilleros attach firecrackers to their lances before piercing the bull’s shoulders. The explosions startle the bull and work it into a defensive frenzy for an unlucky matador. To suggest the smoke and heat from the fireworks Goya used an intaglio technique known as open-bite. He brushed etching acid directly onto the surface of the plate, which eroded shallow smoky patterns into the printing surface as it transformed copper molecules into gas.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
