Label TextWhile sketching in the field, Baumann worked with the idea of a final color woodcut in mind. He selectively clarified the image he saw, planning for the transfer of the design to the woodcut blocks. "I work with a color sketch," he once observed, "made with a brush stroke as sharp and direct as the gouge will cut." Back in his studio, he transferred the design to woodcut blocks by tracing its principal contour lines to impress them onto a woodblock placed underneath.
