Label TextOne of the finest examples of mission architecture in the United States, San Xavier del Bac is situated in the Santa Cruz Valley nine miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The Jesuit explorer and missionary, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino founded the mission in 1700 to minster to the indigenous Tohono O'odham tribe. He sited his church in a desert oasis that the Indians called Bac, where the Santa Cruz river rises to the surface after coursing for miles underground. Kino dedicated his church to Saint Francis Xavier. Baumann visited on March 21, 1927.ProvenanceThe artist; Ann Baumann, Santa Rosa, CAOn View
