Label TextThis is probably a view from Baumann's Graphic Art Service, located in a high-rise office building at 910 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. A construction boom began in the city in the 1880s, after many downtown buildings were destroyed in the Great Fire. Architects like William LeBaron Jenney and Daniel Burnham pioneered steel-frame construction and large windows, and Louis Sullivan emphasize the verticality in his building designs. Working in some of the first modern skyscrapers, Baumann and his colleagues called themselves "cliff dwellers."ProvenanceThe artist; Ann Baumann, Santa Rosa, CA
