DescriptionTall knife-like scythe blade reinforced at back, of flat section for half its length where it becomes lozenge section to point. Base of blade prolonged as very long langet on obverse & riveted to another langet on reverse, between 2 is sandwiched wooden circular section staff. Fitted to this below head is a right angled iron hook curving at its end. This was used to support a musket when firing. At base of langets is tongue & groove joint with a modern, overly long staff.
ProvenanceEx-collection Meyrick, Riggs Metropolitan Museum of Art collection. Purchased by Museum at Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc.. (NYC) sale of October 24-26, 1956, sale no. 1701, lot no. 119. Paid $80 for lot which included HAM#s 3128.1-4. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
