DescriptionPhotograph from an album of 208 cyanotypes on cream wove paper.Frederick Coulson captures a young woman, likely one of his sisters, in the act of smoking, considered improper behavior for a woman at the time. Here, in the middle of winter, the Salisbury greenhouse is an ideal escape for her vice. The inexpensive and convenient process of cyanotype printing was conducive to such candid images.
