Label TextAfter covering the back of the sheet with scribbles of soft graphite, Baumann traced this sketch to transfer its design to his woodcut blocks. He drew directly on its surface with a pencil, pressing hard to trace its outlines onto the woodblock underneath. In doing so he fractured the layers of dried gouache, which have continued to flake away ever since.
