Label TextThe village of Alcalde lies between Santa Fe and Taos on the Rio Grande river. Baumann sometimes visited Alcalde on his sketching trips along the river and around the quaint crossroads. Flowering spring trees were among the artist's favorite subjects, but this gouache sketch is unusual in its treatment of the sky. It is similar in tone and color to the gold leaf that Baumann sometimes used for his prints. One of these is April, which employs similar subject and colors for a print done in 1930. The artist's cross hatching even simulates the effect of gold leaf on laid paper.ProvenanceThe artist; Ann Baumann, Santa Rosa, CA
