Label TextThis image exemplifies Goya’s visual storytelling skills. The viewer identifies with the bullfighter facing into the composition, who raises his lance. By contrast, the movement of the second banderillero seems immediate and split-second. A bull lifts the torero off his feet and twists him in the air. At the same time the bullfighter tries to avoid the bull’s horns. Placed off-center and planted firmly on all fours, the beast effortlessly pitches the torero with a twist of its powerful neck. Goya combines a skillfully planned composition with careful observation to convey a kinesthetic sensation.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UK
