Label TextIn his encyclopedic travelogue, Viaje de España (Travels through Spain), Antonio Ponz bemoaned the dearth of prints that reproduced works by the country’s great artists. Goya was in a unique position to tap this new market. He was a skilled etcher with court connections that enabled him to sketch paintings by Guercino, Ribera, and Velázquez, in the Royal Palace in Madrid. This is one of the nineteen prints that Goya published in 1778, which included royal portraits, two court dwarfs, and the imaginary likenesses of ancient satirists Menippus and Aesop.
