Label TextThis is one of the most heroic images of Goya’s series. In the Madrid bullring on June 16, 1777, Manuel Rendón was working with superstar matador Costillares. The masterful picador is shown lancing the bull from a rearing horse, like Saint George slaying the dragon. Gored in the chest, the horse later stumbled, unseating the picador, who fell backwards on his head. The fracture to the base of his skull caused Rendón’s death. Goya’s dramatic image commemorates Rendón’s skill and bravery in action, rather than the inglorious details of his demise.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UKOn View
