Label TextPedro Romero Martínez came from a bullfighting family. His father and two brothers were toreros, and his grandfather, after whom he is named, is credited with advancing the use of the small cape, or muletilla. After several noteworthy fights in Seville and Madrid, Romero established his reputation in 1775, a year in which he vanquished 285 brave bulls. Romero is regarded as the first matador to consider bullfighting an art form rather than a mere display of courage. He retired from the ring in 1799, having slain 5558 bulls over the course of his career.ProvenanceCraddock and Barnard, London, UKOn View
